It can also be a great way for you to spend some time with your child, to see how their personal tastes have developed and to teach them some valuable lessons about negotiation as well.
You may be surprised to know that the first step in the room redecorating process doesn’t begin with picking out a princess theme or figuring out the right shade of rocket blue. Knowing when your child is ready for the change can be more important than the decorating process itself.

According to Dr. Steve O’Brien, assistant professor of child psychology for Argosy University/Tampa, knowing where your child is at in their development is the key. “When your child’s interests begin to expand to the world around them and become more personal, your child may be ready and excited for a new room.” Changes in television viewing from animated cartoons to “real” shows like those on Animal Planet and Nickelodeon, interest in different types of music and a move towards more mature toys are indicators as well.

Remember that your child’s room is not your own. While your furniture, collections and possessions spread over the entire home, theirs are usually confined to one room. Their bedrooms are multifunctional spaces that need to meet a variety of needs. “The space needs to be a place where your child can sleep, store their things, socialize with friends, play and even study,” says LeAnn Baier, interior design instructor for The Art Institute of Las Vegas. According to O’Brien, “It should be both comfortable and comforting to them and designed in a way that is conducive to their development.”

Weed through the contents of your child’s room and help them prioritize what they need in the space and what they don’t.” Identify what items should be in open storage where your child can access them easily, which ones can be placed in closets, which need to be convenient to access and which can be stored elsewhere or simply thrown away.

The best way to maximize space in any bedroom, according to Baier, is with a closet system. According to Steven Mann, managing partner of Crowne Closets & Cabinetry in Las Vegas, “If you have a single shelf and pole in your closet, installing a closet system can increase hanging space by two thirds and give the customer needed shelving as well.” If you can’t afford a custom system, there are other options as well. Your local do-it-yourself warehouse can also help when it comes to closet systems and storage solutions, as can a little ingenuity.

Go to the organization aisle of your favorite store, look at the various storage items there and find ways to use them in your child’s room. Baier uses canvas shoe holders that hang from a traditional closet pole to store games, puzzles and art materials for her daughter. Remember that children’s clothes are shorter so you can often fit a bookcase or toy organizer under them in the closet. Consider under-the-bed storage as well. Wall shelves and other off-the-floor storage can be a great way to allow children to display their collections in an organized fashion. Bookcases are another storage solution for kid items but can take up vital floor space in the room.

The primary pieces in your child’s bedroom should be the furniture. “The best case scenario,” says Baier, “is that parents have planned ahead of time for the transition and avoided furniture and items that are age-specific.” Whether you have them already or will need to purchase them now, opt for classic pieces that will grow with your child.

Walls should be handled in a similar manner. Baier encourages her clients to opt for strong architectural lines and neutral colors in a room. Bead board, moldings and other architectural elements can give a room the character you are looking for without overwhelming the space. When it comes to color, a light periwinkle is a great way to inject color into the room and appease your daughter’s demand for an all-purple space. “Kids generally don’t have a concept of color shades until they are 8 or 9,” says O’Brien. “Look at different shades of purple with them and come to an agreement on what shade of purple they can use for the walls, assuring them they can inject more vibrant shades in other places.”

So where is the fun, the color and the Spongebob that your child wanted in their space? It’s in the accents. Bed linens, artwork, table lamps and even window coverings are less expensive ways to bring your child’s personality into the space and help their “cool” factor. Keep window shades and light control elements neutral but experiment with a fun valance. Bring your child’s favorite character or animal into the room in the bedding or as art accents on the walls. Most importantly, know that every good design has classic elements that will stand the test of time. Creating a good base for your growing child’s room allows you to make changes at every stage of their life and with reasonable or nominal cost. But with so many options out there, finding that right light may be a little easier said than done. Chances are, you’ve probably wondered, do I have the right sized fixture? How do I install it? How low do I hang it? Will it be too bright or just right?

No question about it, shopping for lighting can be an overwhelming and frustrating experience, and if you start the process before doing your homework, you’ll quickly find yourself in the dark. The good news is, whether you’re giving an old space a makeover or putting the finishing touches on a new one, there are a few simple tricks that can take interior gloom to glow without giving you a major headache.

Before even stepping foot in a showroom, you should first know your budget and come prepared with information about your home. Look for pictures in magazines that reflect your taste. Bring in fabric swatches or color chips for areas you’re redecorating, and take a few quick measurements before leaving your home.

To get you started, follow these helpful interior designers’ tips:

1. How can I achieve the proper illumination in a room?

There’s actually a proven formula for calculating the proper amount of light you’ll need, and it’s not difficult -- just some basic arithmetic.

Formula: Room Length x Room Width x 1.5 = Proper Amount of Watts to Light a Room

For example, let’s say, you have a 12x16-foot living room: 12x16x1.5 = 288 watts of lighting. Therefore, a five-light chandelier using 60-watt bulbs will provide sufficient light for the room. For more concentrated lighting over a task or work area such as a kitchen island, simply multiply the dimensions of the island by 2.5.

2. What size chandelier would best suit a foyer?

Always keep in mind that the bottom of the chandelier should be at least 7-feet from the floor. If there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside. If the foyer is extra large, you may also want to include wall sconces for additional light.

To determine the chandelier’s width, simply add the dimensions together. For example, let’s say you have a 12x16-foot foyer: 12+16=28. Therefore, the foyer chandelier’s diameter should be approximately 28-inches in width.

3. What’s the best way to light a hallway?

There should be a light every 8 to10-feet. Either flush-mounts or semi-flush fixtures can be used depending on ceiling height.

4. What size chandelier should hang over my dining room table?

It’s best to choose one with a diameter equal to one half the width of the table. Here, as in the foyer, room dimensions dictate the width of the chandelier. Also, keep in mind that the bottom of the chandelier should be at least 2 1/2 feet above the table.

5. How do I light a dinette area?

Normally, a decorative pendant or a fixture with a down light will do the job. Use a dimmer to soften the light when entertaining and brighten the area for homework or hobby-related tasks. Again, the bottom of the pendant should be at least 2 1/2 feet above the table. Normally 100 watts of light is sufficient for these areas.
6. What’s the best way to light a bathroom?

Most bathrooms only have a light fixture above the mirror because that is where the single outlet box is usually placed. The problem: top-mounted lighting casts shadows down on the face, harshly accentuating flaws and making lines look deeper. If you want to see your true self, then you also need lighting on each side of your face.

7. When do I need portable lighting?

Besides adding a focal point, portable lights can provide extra light for tasks such as reading, homework and crafts and should be used when additional task light is needed. If you’re using a floor or desk lamp, the bottom of the lampshade should be approximately 42-inches from the floor’s surface. Desk lamps should be 16-inches above the work surface, and torchieres, used to light dark corners, should be 66 to 72-inches from the floor.

Feel a little more prepared? So go ahead, take out that home improvement list and get ready to cross a few things off. Sconces, light fixtures attached to the wall halfway between the floor and ceiling, get thumbs-up approval for adding sophistication to a space.

“The most significant current trend in sconces is the extraordinary variety of styles that have appeared in the marketplace,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, AIA, IES, CSI, architect, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association and professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky. “It seems as if every conceivable material, finish and style is available. This is a trend in the lighting industry in general, but sconces have significantly proliferated as a category in the last three to four years.”

While traditional brass sconces continue to rate raves, there has been an increase in painted metal, and nickel or pewter finishes. Hand-forged steel offers rustic appeal. Post-modern styles emphasize simple sconces with modernist lines and shapes but with some variety in the details and the ornament.

Sconces range in size and shape to fit any wall. While the average indoor sconce is about 12 inches tall, some are as long as 30 inches and quite slender.

“People are increasingly looking for sconces with a clean, architectural look,” says Brandon Levin, a vice president at a renowned design group in Los Angeles. “Brushed nickel and dark bronze are popular finishes which work in a wide variety of applications.”

Most exciting is the availability of shades made of glass, fabric and other materials. Rey-Barreau says, “Traditional sconces with exposed lamps designed to simulate the appearance of a candle tend to be glaring, since the filament of the light bulb is exposed. “Shades help soften the look.”

Sconces add tremendous comfort to a space because they bring attention to the perimeter of a room. Added to soaring spaces, they offer a method of creating a more human scale. When controlled by a dimmer, they are extremely valuable in places such as family rooms, media rooms and living rooms as a means of controlling the mood of the space.

From their perch on the wall, sconces create a play of light and shadow that changes as the evening darkens. Add a dimmer to control the light quality of a sconce, and a room can be modified to create unique and varying moods.

Technically, a sconce is a term used to define wall-mounted fixtures that are installed on the inside of a home. The use of wall-mounted fixtures on the exterior of a home is a common detail, but these fixtures are more commonly called outdoor fixtures or wall lanterns. They serve the same purpose as interior sconces, but are designed to withstand exposure to varied weather conditions. The hottest new home decorating trends are reflecting the colorful changing landscape.

According to Peggy Van Allen, color specialist for Pratt & Lambert Paints, the new trends are easy to incorporate into existing design schemes.

“The fall season and its vibrant color palette contain some extraordinarily rich, yet versatile hues. The depth of color provides extensive options for adding room accents, changing themes and styles, and even completely redecorating,” says Van Allen.

The following are some tips from Van Allen to help you get started:

Embrace color

Painting is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to give a room a facelift. Currently, autumn-inspired hues are the must-haves on the market. According to Van Allen, red is an ideal choice when it comes to fall colors. Whether it’s cherry, persimmon, or cranberry, there is an abundance of red accessories -- such as rugs and pillows -- to coordinate, making red a bold, yet safe selection. “Along with darker shades of burgundy and cinnamon, reds make a room feel both comforting and energizing, adding a feeling of warmth as the weather gets colder,” she adds.

Traditional neutral colors never go out of style, but there are a number of new additions to the category this season. Sand, wheat, mustard, stone, and clay, are just a few of the new colors that blend harmoniously with most existing decor schemes. They also make a room appear larger and more open.

Using a few different but coordinating colors can be a great way to add dimension to your room and highlight decorative trims, furnishings, doorways, and shelves. In a large room, different colors can divide space into visually separate areas. This is helpful in a room that serves multiple functions.

Accessorize

Painting isn’t the only way to give a stylish nod to autumn. Look for blankets, pillows, and rugs in darker colors and textured fabrics to complement your furniture. Choose fabric patterns with metallic or beaded detail, embroidery, or Mid-eastern influences. Besides providing an instant updated look, these easy additions will make your home seem warmer and more comfortable. Fill shelves, tables and bare corners with various-sized candles in delicious seasonal scents like cinnamon, vanilla, apple, and pumpkin pie. Or, use copper accents wherever possible for a rustic fall look.

Get Creative

Festive fall decorating doesn’t mean you have to be the neighbor with the Styrofoam ghost on your front lawn. Seasonal staples like pumpkins, gourds, and autumn leaves look great in and around the home, but try using them in new and appealing ways. For a modern centerpiece, simply line up mini pumpkins, gourds, or fruit on a long white platter, low basket, or tray. Then add berry clusters, leaves, or flowers for a colorful garnish.

Fill miniature glass vases with seeds, dried berries, or potpourri for stylish countertop or windowsill accents. Create elegantly simple fall wreaths by repeating one item like acorns, berries, or miniature pumpkins in a circle and add a satin bow.

Everyone loves the idea of jack-o-lanterns, but not everyone loves carving them. If pumpkin carving isn’t your thing, try this chic alternative: drill lines of different-sized holes down the sides of your pumpkin. After adding a candle, these “designer” pumpkin accents will provide elegant light for a room.

Any of these fall decorating tips are sure to add a feeling of stylish festivity to your home’s interior. “The most important decorating tip is to make your home as comfortable and pleasant as possible for you and those you love,” says Van Allen. “Get creative and find out what works best for you.” Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover other inspiring and practical decorating tips, follow: home decorating tips

decorating tips: Do-It-Yourselfer's Guide to Building a Home Theater

(ARA) – If you love watching movies, but not the movie theater experience you’re not alone. According to an AP-AOL poll released in June of 2005, 73 percent of Americans would rather watch movies at home. Among the many reasons cited in the poll, crowded theaters, uncomfortable seats, expensive tickets and pricey concessions.
With so many complaints about theaters, it should come as no surprise that one of the hottest home improvement projects there is these days is to transform a family room, extra bedroom, basement or even a garage into a home theater. If the idea sounds enticing to you, but you don’t want to spend a small fortune, you may want to do the project yourself.

* Seating

A good place to start is by deciding how realistic you want the experience to be. Try thumbing through a home theater magazine for ideas. If you’re going to set the room up in a wide open space, like a basement, for example, you’ll have room to go so far as to install authentic movie theater seats, complete with the tilting backs and drink holders. If your space is limited, a sofa would make a better seating option.

* The screen

As far as the screen goes, they come in various fabrics, sizes and prices. At the high end are cloth screens that roll up and down at the click of a button -- at the low end, square-shaped screens like those your teacher may have rolled out of the closet when you were in school. The type of screen that’s best depends on the projector, the viewing angle, the amount of ambient light in the room and the distance from the projector to the screen.

* The projector

The big ticket item for this venture will be its key component -- the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) or Digital Light Processing (DLP) video projector, which range in price from $2,000 to $10,000. Since this type of equipment projects images, it’s necessary to have an adequate amount of distance between the projector and screen.

The projector can be located on a table, shelf or special stand, but the most popular way to set it up is to attach it to the ceiling via a ceiling mount. You can pick up a custom one from your projector’s manufacturer, or save money by going with the new Sanus Systems Universal Projector Ceiling Mount. It was designed to simplify installation for virtually every projector available for ceiling mount application. “This mount’s sleek look, sturdy construction, projector compatibility and professional adjustment mechanism make it the best low profile universal mount on the market,” says Keith Pribyl of Sanus Systems.

* Surround sound

When most people think about "watching" a movie they think of the visual image. But what really differentiates a home theater from a big screen television is the audio. According to Dolby Laboratories, innovators and leaders in sound technology, a good home theater set up has at least five main speakers: a center speaker, usually on top of or just below the screen or TV; two speakers in the front of the room on either side of the screen or TV near the corners of the room, generally about ear level for seated listeners and placed at the same height as the center speaker; and two speakers placed slightly behind and above ear level but facing horizontally and not down toward the listener. This gives the valued “surround sound” effect.

The speakers can be placed on bookshelves, on speaker stands or mounted right to the walls or ceiling. Sanus makes both speaker stands and mounts that can be attached to walls and ceilings. The stands and mounts both come in three color options (silver, black and white).

For more information about Sanus Systems Universal Projector Ceiling Mount or the speaker mounts, log on to www.sanus.com.

Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover other inspiring and practical decorating tips, follow: home decorating tips

decorating tips: innovation makes kitchens convenient, functional and stylish

(ARA) – The kitchen has become the center of the action in today’s home. It’s used for everything from entertaining to doing homework. Oh, and cooking, too. The amenities found in the kitchen reflect this multi-tasking. You’re likely to find a computer and a television in the room in addition to more traditional appliances.
But the fundamental role of the kitchen hasn’t changed – and neither has the desire of home cooks for features that make the kitchen functional and practical as well as attractive. “Double ovens, commercial-grade appliances and solid surface countertops were once found only in upscale homes, but they are becoming the standard for all kitchens as they go from being behind the scenes to the forefront of the action,” notes Jamie Hurd, academic department director of interior design at The Art Institute of Portland.

All of these upgrades add style to a room that many consider the focal point of their homes. “In newer homes, the kitchen often opens up into the family room, becoming part of the living area,” says Hurd. For this reason, in addition to state-of-the-art appliances, homeowners are adding other stylish elements as well, such as colorful tiled backsplashes and beautiful wood cabinets.

“People realize the value of a good kitchen, and the value it adds to their homes,” says Hurd. And details like plumbing and lighting are just as important as the right appliances. Two new sinks and accessories from Kohler reflect the trend of kitchens that work hard and look great. Cast iron sinks with Smart Divide functionality provide the best of both worlds – the convenience of a double-basin sink and the roominess of a single-basin sink. Kohler accomplishes this thanks to a basin divider that is half the height of conventional dividers and thereby offers greater clearance between the faucet and the mid-section of the sink.

Thanks to this innovative design, the Smart Divide sink is better suited to accommodate larger pots and pans with extended handles. It also helps save water, since extra long pots and pans can be more fully submerged, meaning less water is required to soak the cookware. The Smart Divide sinks are available in two models, Iron/Tones and Langlade.

Homeowners who want streamlined functionality will love the accessories they can use with the sinks, including Kohler’s popular Forté pullout kitchen faucet. Graceful and functional, the spout height and reach are generous enough to provide added clearance when handling large containers. The pullout spray head is easy to maneuver and the spray pattern can be changed with one hand. It is easy to maintain, featuring a MasterClean Sprayface that withstands calcium buildup and can be cleaned simply by rubbing the sprayface with a fingertip. The faucet is available in a number of finishes to fit any décor.

If you’re searching for an uncluttered look for your kitchen, you can add a hot water dispenser for making instant coffee or tea and put soap or lotion dispenser under your sink for a sleek look. A new universal cutting board means you can wash and chop your produce right at the sink no matter what size your kitchen sink happens to be. Bedding can be an expensive investment. The following guidelines from the Coin Laundry Association will help extend their life:
* Be kind to your bedding. Wash and dry in large-capacity machines. Most household washers can hold between 10- and 12-pounds of laundry. This is not large enough for a queen-size comforter. Commercial-grade washers, such as those found at your coin laundry, can handle up to 75 pounds of wash and are best for cleaning bedding. Using larger machines will not only extend the life of your comforter, but also your home washer and dryer.

* Wash colored bedding in a mild detergent. Whites should be followed up with an oxygenated-bleach. Avoid chlorine bleaches, which leave a residue that is hard to clean and can cause discoloration over time.

* When drying your bedding, use a fabric-softening sheet as opposed to a liquid-softener. Fabrics, such as down, have a tendency to absorb the liquid unevenly.

* Contrary to popular opinion, you can wash down-filled bedding. Be sure to read the care instructions, but most down comforters and pillows can be laundered. Use a mild detergent to wash and when drying put some clean tennis balls into the dryer to help fluff and distribute the down.

* Wash and dry flannel sheets separately. Flannel has a tendency to deposit lint in the dryer. Perhaps the most important care instruction for flannel is not to over-dry. Over-drying can cause wrinkles to set and colors to fade.

* Wool blankets can be washed and dried! Use cold water on a gentle cycle and fluff dry. Add some towels to help absorb moisture and cut down on drying time.

* Save time and use a coin laundry’s convenient wash-dry-fold service, all you have to do is drop the bedding off and pick it up the next day. Some stores will even pick-up and drop-off for an additional charge.

* Always read the care-labels! Laundering comforters and bedspreads at the coin laundry saves a considerable amount of money over dry cleaning, but certain fabrics, such as satin, cannot be washed and should be taken to a professional dry cleaner. Laminate flooring is an ideal flooring solution, uniquely engineered to offer “it all” for busy, design-savvy families.
“With new design technology, we are creating laminate planks that are as detailed and beautiful as real wood -- yet much simpler to install and maintain for active families,” explains Claes Wennerth, president of laminate flooring manufacturer Alloc, Inc. of Racine, Wisc.

Alloc launched the era of the no-glue laminate floor over a decade ago. As the first manufacturer to offer the aluminum mechanical locking system, Alloc made laminate flooring installation a snap and is now upping the ante in terms of product design. Current laminate innovations go beyond ‘the surface’ and incredibly convincing wood finishes; even plank configurations are now replicating real wood’s nuances.

“Our new Woodstrip line comes in extended plank lengths . . . popular dimensions once only offered in hardwood flooring,” Wennerth states.

Alloc recently introduced the inventive ‘WoodStrip’ product to its Classics line of laminate flooring. Named for its unique plank dimensions, WoodStrip comes in extra long, lean plank lengths.

WoodStrip planks are 50.79” in length with a width of 3.3" and thickness of .31". For added interest and dimension, the strips feature a 4-sided decorative groove. The overall look is very realistic, clean and classic.

“WoodStrip is an important innovation for Alloc,” explains Wennerth. “Consumers want the warmth and beauty of wood yet they need the convenience and easy maintenance laminate floors provide. WoodStrip is the best of both worlds -- beautiful and simple.”

WoodStrip comes in four finishes -- American Oak, Rustic Oak, Old Oak and Merbau -- each enhanced with texture to replicate real wood. American Oak and Rustic Oak have Embossed-In-Register detailing for heightened authenticity.

As part of the Alloc Classics line, all WoodStrip products are extremely durable. The planks are constructed of 8mm direct pressure laminate, feature the industry's strongest fiberboard locking mechanism and provide an aluminum oxide surface for exceptional wear resistance. Also, the plank edges are impregnated with wax for excellent moisture resistance. Alloc Classics are warranted for 30 years residentially for wear, fade and stain resistance, as well as for joint integrity. Alloc products are available through floor covering retailers throughout North America. It’s a never-ending chore; but today’s laundry rooms are making this mundane task more efficient and convenient. Rising from the basement to the first -- and even second floors -- these rooms are being transformed into multi-purpose centers where homeowners not only have room to store cleaning and pet supplies but also have space for craft and sewing projects. Learn how storage and small details can make your laundry room more useful.
Storage is Key

In addition to doing your laundry, plan how else you could use the space and create “centers” of activity. Designate shelves and counter space for your pets, crafts, gift wrapping and even storing seasonal decorations, dishes and table linens.

Install a high shelf or cabinet over the washing machine to conveniently store laundry detergent, fabric softener and spray starch. Consider keeping cleansers and other cleaning supplies here, too, so that they are out of the sight and reach of little ones.

Create a space to hang and dry clothing such as a retractable clothes line that can be removed when not in use. Extra counter space or a small table near the dryer is ideal for folding clothes, plus you can use the storage under the table to hide laundry baskets when they are not in use.

Let There Be Light

Even in the basement, it’s possible to create the illusion of light. Replace the old fluorescent lights with newer updated fixtures, or add pendant lighting above your designated activity centers. Freshen up the paint with pale pastels or bold, bright colors. Consider adding a cheery wallpaper border. Brighten up the floor with a laminate in natural, warm tones. Today’s new flooring options are easy to install and are durable and moisture resistant. Buy inexpensive, colorful throw rugs to create a more welcoming and comfortable space.

Sink Sense

Today’s utility sinks and faucets are more attractive and functional. The Lancelot Big Single from Moen, with its deep, single bowl can be used for everything from washing the dog, to repotting plants, soaking clothes and cleaning paint brushes. Moen’s Integra faucet with its longer pullout hose makes tasks at the sink, such as filling vases and large cleaning pails, easier and more convenient. Now it also comes in a stylish Brushed Chrome finish for a cleaner, more visually appealing look.

Details Make the Difference

Even the best designed rooms can benefit from small details. Since you spend considerable time in this room, add some entertainment. An under-counter mounted CD player can liven the mood in any laundry room. Even a small television can make ironing and folding clothes a bit more fun.

Tuck that large ironing board away. There are a number of options for taking the hassle out of folding and storing ironing boards. Consider installing a roll-out board near the washer and dryer or try a pull-down version that is hidden inside a cabinet.

Label bins and baskets for specific laundry chores. Designate baskets for dark, light and dry cleaning so that family members can help sort laundry. Assign names to baskets so everyone can be responsible for putting the clean clothes away, too.

By updating your laundry room and making it more functional, you may find that time spent there is more enjoyable for you and your family. With a plan for organizing the room and a few added touches of color and comfort, the dreaded task of laundry may not be such a “chore” after all. According to one recent study, nearly half of all new homes are either built with an attached deck or the new homeowners add one within five years. That’s a lot of new decks.
The reasons behind the growing popularity are simple. Working adults are spending more time at the office making it increasingly difficult to make quality time for the family. The same pressures are driving down the time available to enjoy the outdoors. As a result, families are finding that outdoor living spaces are a great way to fill both voids.

Additionally, homeowners that like to entertain really appreciate the freedom of their outdoor living spaces. A byproduct of the home improvement craze is that homeowners are increasingly concerned about potential damage to the indoor living spaces that they’ve invested so much to improve. They are less willing to take chances with even the best-behaved guests.

These same people are choosing composite decking for many of the above reasons. Composite decking generally requires much less maintenance than other materials, which makes it ideal for busy families, people on the go or anyone interested in minimizing the amount of time and effort they spend on their home. Moreover, composite decks are durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for worry-free entertaining.

Composites are the latest generation of decking materials and they offer exceptional durability. So, it’s not surprising that the demand for composites has grown significantly in recent years. As the demand has grown, so has the selection of brands available. This proliferation has made it more difficult for homeowners to choose the one that’s right for their home.

One of the most popular choices among all composites is an engineered decking and matching handrail system called Weyerhaeuser ChoiceDek. It does not require staining, sealing or treating and carries a manufacturer’s limited lifetime, fully transferable warranty. It’s also resistant to termites, splintering and even dents from hail. The product line also includes a complete, decorative railing system including posts, post caps, railing and balusters.

“Hands down, ChoiceDek’s number one selling point is its low maintenance factor,” said Natasha Valach, of Weyerhaeuser. “Homeowners enjoy spending less time maintaining their backyard deck and more time enjoying it.”

Better yet, ChoiceDek is made with recycled plastics and recycled wood products, which helps keep these used items out of landfills. Old plastic milk jugs and grocery sacks are melted down to surround the ground up wood fibers and make them virtually waterproof. The wood fibers make the plastic stronger and help dissipate heat on hot summer days.

Do-it-yourselfers will also appreciate how easy it is to work with ChoiceDek. Although denser than wood, you can easily construct a deck using standard hand and power tools. Thinner blades with fewer than 20 teeth are recommended because they wear longer and resist heat better, and pre-drilling pilot holes is recommended when installing balusters and hand rails. ChoiceDek boards are also free of knots, so they can be cut anywhere and that means less waste.

To learn more about ChoiceDek’s low maintenance composite decking products that combine modern durability with the classic appearance of wood, just call (877) 235-6873 to speak with a Weyerhaeuser representative. There’s a new design trend sweeping the home decor industry. These days more and more people are setting the stage for a new look by replacing their flooring.

Floor Covering Weekly, an industry magazine that tracks trends in the flooring industry, lists tile, hardwood and vinyl as the most popular surfaces out there, but goes on to say that the interest in specialty flooring, which is both stylish and comfortable is growing. Sales of natural flooring surfaces in particular, which include bamboo and cork are booming.

What makes them so popular? Being environmentally friendly, people can feel good about them. Bamboo flooring is made from grass which is able to rejuvenate itself to maturity within 4 to 5 years. Cork flooring is made by harvesting the outer bark of a tree while allowing it to continue to grow.

In the kitchen, islands or bars can be surrounded by color that will really set them apart from the rest of the room. You can also use a color change to separate the kitchen from an adjoining dining room or great room.

You can make the room appear larger by using light colors and simple patterns, or choose a busy pattern and darker colors to make the room feel cozier. If you want the patterns to be the focal point of the room, you can install zig zags of alternating colors, or even checkerboards. If so, is your home guest friendly? Have you noticed that certain members of your family or friends always have excuses not to attend your holiday gatherings, barbeques or other social events? Don’t take the excuses personally. It likely isn’t you or your party-throwing abilities. Instead, it may be your living environment.

Your home may be designed to adequately meet your daily needs, but what about the special needs of visitors? Although you might be of excellent health with no physical limitations, the same may not be true for some of your friends and family, for instance an elderly aunt, a friend recuperating from a stroke, a son recovering from a broken leg, a pregnant daughter-in-law or a grandchild with cerebral palsy.

To determine if your home is guest friendly, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recommends that you ask yourself the following questions:

1. Does your home have at least one “barrier-free” entrance without steps and with an easy to open door?

2. Is there a bench or other seating outside your front door to provide a comfortable environment for elderly or disabled guests to wait until you are able to greet them?

3. Are the doorways and hallways in your home wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair or large stroller? (An added benefit of large doorways and hallways is an illusion of spaciousness, even in small living spaces, and they make moving furniture less cumbersome.)

4. Is there a bathroom on the main floor of your home? Is this bathroom large enough to accommodate someone in a wheelchair using a walker? Can a disabled visitor easily use the commode or sink? Even in small guest bathrooms, an enclosed vanity can be replaced with a pedestal sink to create more space and enhance leg room.

5. Are the area rugs in your family room, recreation room or other communal areas flat or recessed into the floor to prevent tripping and to accommodate a guest on crutches or one who is using a cane?

6. As the kitchen has become the “social epicenter” of the home, is yours equipped with multi-level counter spaces to accommodate people of different heights and abilities? Is it large enough to allow comfortable maneuvering by a guest with any physical disabilities, particularly an individual in a wheelchair?

7. Is the lighting in your living room, family room or other common area of a high enough wattage to accommodate guests with cataracts or decreased visual acumen? (Before increasing wattage in your lamps and fixtures, make sure they can safely accommodate the additional energy level.)

8. Are the interior doors in your home equipped with lever handles instead of traditional door knobs so that guests with arthritis or other hand- or arm-related physical limitations can easily enter and exit without having to grasp or turn their wrists?

9. Is there a smooth transition (no steps) to your backyard, patio or deck so your guests can enjoy both the indoor and outdoor areas of your home?

By working with an interior designer you will be certain your home will be designed to enhance the experiences of all of your guests, no matter their age and/or abilities. As a result, you will be able to entertain more successfully. In fact, the only future “problem” you could encounter in regards to entertaining will be too many guests at your gatherings, and no repeat excuses for not attending! Fret no more -- salvation can come in the form of creative paint remedies. Selecting a paint color needn’t be intimidating but stimulating.

It is often easier to experiment with an accent wall color or just a front door Classic front door colors are Chinese red or sunshine yellow, but don't rule out electric purple or teal blue. Pick color from your garden and coordinate with your front door. That way one can enjoy a garden year round.

Color is an integral part of our life. It can lift our spirits, signify celebration, or even change the mood and visual feel of our living spaces.

- Inspirational: Orange
From deep sienna to a lively mango, orange is one of today’s hottest colors. Orange, either used as an accent on one wall or spread throughout the home, welcomes family and friends.

- Peace: Blues
By incorporating blue into a living space, homeowners can create a soulful and restful retreat. What color better represents the calmness of both the sky and water?

- Healing: greens
With Spring in the air, green hues are perfect for bringing the outdoors in. There’s not a better color for helping a home become one with nature.

- Timeless: neutrals
The popularity of neutrals has never been stronger. What makes today’s selection exciting is their depth, richness and beauty. Tie the palette together with interesting glossy and flat finishes and watch how a living space can sparkle.

- Optimistic: yellows
Yellow provides "punch" to any room. It's a favorite for darker or north-facing spaces--it adds a visual sense of both warmth and welcome.

There are countless do’s and don’ts expressed by interior designers from all ends of the spectrum, such as: avoid dark colors in a small room; don’t use shiny paint on walls, and never pair pink with red. These suggestions were probably created for perfectly legitimate reasons. But if you wish to break “the rules,” don’t let them hold you back. You could find yourself with an inspirational interior. Worst-case scenario, you can always repaint white! In most cases, reworking the lighting is all it will take to transform a room from “drab” to “fab.”

“When people go into model homes and see what’s in: the high ceilings, angled walls and dramatic lighting, they want to recreate the looks in their own homes, but run into limitations. Unless they’re willing to spend a lot of money on renovations, they can’t do anything about the shape of the room, but decorative lighting can be used to transform the space and create a sense of style anywhere,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association and professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky. He travels the country tracking lighting trends, and believes one of the reasons decorative lighting has become so popular in the past two or three years is because it allows you to easily add a modern touch to any room without having to make expensive upgrades.

Among the many options gaining in popularity, putting recessed cans in kitchen and living areas to better balance the light, installing track lighting above areas you want to highlight, putting up picture lights to showcase photos and artwork and adding pendants that will allow you to showcase a small area. These days, they are being hung over islands and peninsulas in kitchens, and in rooms dedicated to entertainment -- over bars and gathering spots in basements. “When you think of a pendant, the image that comes to mind is probably a small, obscure fixture hanging down from the ceiling to light a specific area, but these days they are anything but obscure,” says Rey-Barreau. “They are fashion statements.”

Pendants are now available in all shapes and sizes and in looks ranging from traditional to eclectic. “The pendant offerings we have found our customers reacting favorably to have been those with a color pallet consistent with an Asian Fusion, Retro and Tuscan/Mediterranean style. Those utilizing calming neutrals with clear hues infused with light are popular as well,” says Cory Echito, who is a product development manager for the Juno Lighting Group in Chicago.

Pendant fixtures made of metal can give a room an almost gothic look. Ceramic fixtures can be painted any color under the sun. “If you’re looking for a more unique look, a popular material to go with is Murano glass hand-blown in Italy,” says Ray-Barreau. “Each one is an original work of art.” Some Murano fixtures feature a single color of glass blown into a bell-or bowl-shaped fixture. Others are tapestries of color twisting and turning into unusual shapes. Once you hang the pendant up and add a light bulb, color dances across the ceiling or wall the light is pointed towards.

Just as varied as the colors and materials available for pendants are the methods of display. A lot of people are putting up not one, but two, three or even four pendants in a circle or row to emphasize a space. Some people hang each of them from single channel fixtures. type='text'>decorating tips: keep summer heat outside with shutters inside

(ARA) – In the summer, homeowners across the West are fighting to lower air conditioning bills, protect furniture from the harsh rays of the sun, and keep their families cool and comfortable.

The latest trend in home decorating can solve all three problems: interior shutters made from Polywood, an engineered wood substitute. Polywood is a synthetic material that insulates against the summer heat and blocks the sun from entering the home better than any other window covering. The shutters will not fade, warp, crack or discolor when exposed to extreme heat.

Shutters are not only a beautiful addition to any home’s décor, but they are practical as well. They provide a barrier between heat entering the home and cool air leaving it. Here are three ways that the right shutters can help beat the heat this summer while making your home look beautiful.

As the cost of power increases, homeowners search for more ways to cut back on their electric bills. Polywood has been tested to be 70 percent more energy efficient than wood shutters and 1600 percent more energy efficient than aluminum mini-blinds.
Additional insulation against the sun’s rays equates to real savings in summer cooling bills.

Harsh summer light can cause permanent damage to carpets and furniture by fading colors and patterns. Shutters block out these rays almost completely, unlike curtains or blinds that only provide partial coverage. People invest thousands of dollars into carpet and furniture, only to let them be ruined from sun streaming through their windows. Once homeowners notice the effects, it’s too late. Shutters are a beautiful way to protect furniture from fading right now.

With Polywood shutters your home can be an oasis against the summer heat. Coming home to a cool, comfortable room is a calming experience after a long summer day. The white, crisp look of Polywood shutters, coupled with their cooling influence against the sun, creates a comfortable atmosphere for any family to enjoy.

Many families avoid using certain rooms in the summer that get direct sunlight during the day and become uncomfortably hot. Installing interior shutters helps homeowners reclaim these rooms during the warmest months of the year.

So as you aim to fight back at the summer sun, remember that windows are a major conduit of heat transfer into your home. Choose the right window treatment and you’ll be much cooler this summer. In fact, often the picture you see is not how the room looks most of the time. The contents have been rearranged, possibly even enhanced, to improve the composition of the picture.

Once the photographer or cameraman has gone, the room will be changed back to the way the interior designer envisioned it, as a place for people to use and enjoy. After all, the real test of a well designed room is not whether it is photogenic, but whether it works as it was intended for the people who live there.

Magazines and decorating programs can show us what is possible. They can inspire us to think differently about the space we have. But when it comes time to make changes, it is important to think beyond the frame. While we want our homes to be pleasing and attractive, we need them to be functional as well. That is where the expertise of a professional interior designer can prove invaluable.

Unlike many home remodeling or decorating services that may advise you on a particular aspect of your home, a professional interior designer can help put your home project in perspective. Will that “dream” room that looks so great in the magazine also meet your needs on a daily basis? An interior designer will want to know who is going to use the room and how, whether it will accommodate your guests and visitors, and what changes you may be planning for the entire house that could affect the design over time.

Like a chess player who is always several moves ahead of the game, a professional designer has the training and experience to anticipate how lifestyle changes can affect the use of space and vice versa. He or she can ensure that the finished project not only looks right but performs to your expectations now and for years to come.

Going beyond the big picture, a designer is familiar with the thousands of details that make the difference between a good project and a great project. In addition to advising on color, fabric, furniture and furnishings, professional interior designers have an in-depth knowledge of flooring, wall coverings, windows, finishes and sealants, hardware, flooring, lighting, acoustics and many other elements involved in completing a room. He or she also will address safety and health issues, such as indoor air quality and protection against fires or falls. In fact, Feng Shui -- the popular concept of creating harmony in life by adding or moving various home decorating elements -- regards moving water and fish as very beneficial.

Feng Shui experts offer the following tips for creating a serene environment using the natural beauty and calming quality that comes from watching fish swim:

- Black fish represent protection -- very handy to stave off the evil eye from your colleagues or loved ones. Goldfish are “baby dragons” in Feng Shui and considered very lucky.

- The Chinese word for fish, “yu”, is the same as the word for success. If fish are placed in the office or home, it is believed good fortune will follow. Combine the fish with an aquarium with a blue or black lid and base to activate your career.

- A fish bowl on the left hand side of your front door (as you face it from inside) encourages good ‘chi’, the energy force that flows throughout the Universe.

- Three fish symbolize “yang” energy. The best combination is two goldfish (representing good luck and energy) and one black fish (representing protection).

- In Feng Shui, round objects help chi energy to curve around rooms and buildings. They hide problem walls, absorb noise, and add depth and dimension like no other wall surface.

And today’s textured papers -- like sea grass, bamboo, grasscloth, silk, burlap and jute -- are no longer priced just for the jet set. In fact, natural wallpaper’s newfound affordability and technological advances make it a great value, since it stays beautiful for decades

Natural wallpapers are also capable chameleons, looking splendid with family heirlooms and flea market finds in a cottage or country décor; rustically exotic in a tropical room; sleek and modern in a contemporary setting; or time-honored in a classically traditional home. As a frame enhances a painting, the new collections of basket weaves, natural grasses, strings and silks texture papers create dimension and interest while remaining subtle and serene.

As for decorating with natural wallpapers, much of natural wallpaper’s allure is its versatility. Grasscloth gives walls a look and feel that paint simply can’t provide. Fine weaves can be used more formally and big chunky weaves are ideal for more casual rooms. Grasscloth can be used in small cozy libraries and large airy sunrooms, and also in bathrooms, where it gives much-needed warmth against tile, glass and stone.

Some interior decorators believe that Natural wallpaper’s newfound popularity is partially in response to the growing presence of electronics in the home. Technology has spilled into every room in the house, and naturally tactile wallpapers help soften their presence. Natural wallpapers are also easier for do-it-yourself decorators to find than ever before. With this space, you and your child can let your imaginations run wild and really be creative. Throw those traditional décor schemes out the window – this is your chance to try something new.

One of the best ways to start planning the décor for a room is by choosing a theme. Because it’s very important for a child’s room to reflect their interests, involve them in the planning process. Maybe there is an animal or a certain color they love. Do they have a favorite movie or sport? Is there an artist whose work they enjoy? Try using your child’s favorite books as inspiration. Once you have a theme, the fun begins.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Rain Forest
Many children are fascinated by the jungle animals they see in movies such as “The Lion King” or on the cable channel Animal Planet. Why not create a rain forest environment filled with friendly creatures? It’s easy to pull this theme together by using a wall mural to create the effect. Imagine your child’s delight when she wakes up and finds herself in a lush jungle filled with pandas, monkeys and exotic birds in the trees. Select the mural your child likes the best and then complete the décor by adding soft fabric snakes, animal print pillows, a butterfly net on the wall and some cuddly stuffed lions and tigers.

Fairy Tales
Well loved children’s stories such as “Peter Pan,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella,” and “The Wizard of Oz” provide a fanciful focus for room décor. Use vivid paint colors and stencils of ivy or flowers to portray a make-believe world. Add some glittery accents with silver paint and sparkles. Decorate the walls with framed illustrations or a mural that depicts a scene from a book.

Outer Space
Spark your child’s imagination by bringing the stars inside. To create an outer space theme, cover the walls with reflective planets and stars. From the ceiling, hang flying spaceships and decorate with arrangements of constellations. Use an outer space border to outline windows and doors. Images of the planets, the surface of the moon and even the shuttle cockpit are now available.

Ocean
Does your child love to play on the beach? You can recreate that happy environment year round with an ocean-themed bedroom. Use deep blues for the walls and paint the ceiling like a sky complete with fluffy clouds scudding across the surface. Add a sand colored rug or mats on the floor. Accent everything from picture frames to mirrors with ocean shells. If your child isn’t old enough for a real fish tank, photographs or murals of colorful tropical fish are a way to add some marine life to the design. For the young it is the starter home that may be updated and improved upon. As careers and families progress, so do the homes we occupy. Homes at this stage of life may contain more space to accommodate children, and some amenities to reflect the owner’s lifestyle; but they are still defined by resources that must be divided between the need to have a suitable place to live and the need to save for the future.

In the past, many of these were meant to be terminal homes. But now a new type of home and homeowner are emerging. These “nexers” are very different from the generations that preceded them. People are living longer and healthier lives, and when they’ve outgrown the “family” home they are building their “next-stage” homes to meet their needs and wants.

Ty and Ida Mann are such a couple. After their kids moved out, they wanted a home just for the two of them. Ida says, “We realized that the home we lived in for many years was really not where we wanted to be when we decide to retire. We don’t want to move away to a retirement community. We just wanted a home that was ours -- for the way we live now.”

The Manns set out to define what they wanted: the type and location of the lot; the style of the home; the number of rooms and their uses based on their needs and interests; and the amenities they had previously done without. They both like the idea of getting back to nature and prefer outdoor activities but didn’t want to care for a lawn. Since they both had always wanted a log home, they agreed that now was their chance.

Ty and Ida found the perfect property just outside the town where they had raised their family. It had the trees they both wanted and it was within a reasonable drive to the services of the city. They had their dream lot; now they needed their dream home.

Log homes to them were an extension of living close to the outdoors, which said “relaxation” to them in a way conventional homes did not.

One selling point was the fact that Wisconsin Log Homes originated the energy-efficient half-log building system, in which the exterior log of their choice would be applied over a 2-inch by 6-inch wall filled with six inches of fiberglass insulation. They settled for the innovative concept of energy-efficient half-log building system that would both conserve energy costs and help preserve the surroundings they had chosen for their new home. “I can’t emphasize how important an authentic handcrafted finish is to us,” says Ty.

With the lot and home style defined, they were now ready to design their dream home. “Having an experienced team walk us through the planning stage resulted in a home which functions just the way we want it to,” says Ida.

Their architects suggested that the Manns look at how they spend their time now that they are empty nesters. They found they both enjoy time together over morning coffee, and so a sunny breakfast spot was designed. They love to cook and entertain friends, so an open concept kitchen/dining room was designed to allow interaction between them and their guests. They also knew that they both needed their own space, and so a media room for Ty and a craft room for Ida came about. Occasionally they have overnight visitors, resulting in a loft area with separate bedroom and bath. They both wanted a larger master bedroom so a master bedroom suite with a large master bath and plenty of closet space was added.

“Then came the fun part,” says Ida. “We added the extra special touches we simply couldn’t afford when we were raising our family.” The finishing touches in the home include upscale appliances in the kitchen, a stone-faced floor-to-ceiling fireplace and large windows to let in their beautiful view, log interiors in the master bedroom to add warmth and coziness to their home, hardwood floors in appropriate areas, a stunning timber staircase leading to the loft, a large shower and whirlpool tub in the master bath.

There are more and more people like the Manns, who may have had to compromise on previous homes, but the next one is all about them. They’re all shoes. Each style has the same basic makeup. Each has unique benefits. Sneakers alone range from bare-bones cloth models to more expensive, high-tech athletic shoes. People don’t get confused when shopping for shoes because they’re an everyday item that is bought regularly.

Much like shoes, windows come in several different styles and materials, and have a range of benefits and prices. Unlike shoes, however, consumers don’t frequently purchase windows. If you’re considering new windows, you’ll need to see through all the window terminology and product attributes to ensure they’re the right fit.

Window styles

Choosing a window style is typically a matter of personal preference. Do you prefer windows that “crank” out or windows that slide up and down or left or right? Here’s an overview:

- Crank out windows come in two styles: casement and awning. Casement windows open from one side, like a door; awning windows open at the bottom.
- Single and double hung windows are very popular for their traditional look. They have two separate units (sash) inside a single frame. The bottom sash moves up and down in a single hung; both sashes move in a double hung. The sash can often be easily released and removed from the frame to be cleaned from inside.

- Gliding or rolling windows have one or two sash that slide side to side in the jamb track.
- Windows without any moving parts are called fixed, picture or direct-set windows.
- Bay windows are multiple windows configured together to protrude from the home at an angle. Similarly, bow windows are created by multiple windows joined together in a curved shape. Homeowners often use bay or bow windows to create a cozy cove or breakfast nook.

Materials

Wood windows still dominate the housing market, however, vinyl and composite materials are increasingly popular. Wood is durable, attractive, energy efficient and can be painted or stained to create a personalized look. Wood, however, requires regular maintenance.

But manufacturers also provide alternatives that use wood’s desirable properties, require less maintenance and are less susceptible to deterioration. These alternatives include wood windows covered, or clad, in aluminum or vinyl on the exterior. Both vinyl and aluminum clad windows are virtually maintenance free, look great and perform well.

Because they require no maintenance and cost less, all vinyl and vinyl composite windows are gaining on wood. Once considered flimsy, today’s vinyl windows are durable. Some vinyl window frames are reinforced with steel stiffeners, and are fusion welded to prevent separation. However, vinyl windows cannot be painted, inside or out, limiting the ability to change a home’s exterior look or match interior millwork.

All aluminum construction, because it readily conducts heat and cold, is being used less in residential windows as energy codes become more demanding. Aluminum windows have a rigid frame, which can support large panes of glass with little sagging or warping but can eventually pit or dent.

Fiberglass windows are relatively new and therefore are more expensive. Fiberglass windows are typically a solid composite, making them a reliable barrier to outside elements. They have good structural integrity and do not need regular maintenance. Like vinyl, they cannot be stained or painted.

Energy Efficiency

Window glass, its enhancements and the process by which it is placed into the frame is called “glazing.” Energy-efficient windows use insulated or insulating glass -- meaning it has two or three panes of glass. The airspace in between the panes acts as a buffer, reducing the transference of heat or cold. Manufacturers further increase this insulating ability by filling the airspace with a dense, harmless gas such argon or krypton.

When you’re trying to determine windows’ energy efficiency, look for R- and U-values. The higher the R-value, the better the window reduces heating and cooling bills. The lower the U-value, the better the window insulates against heat transference.

Many manufacturers offer products of varied prices and options to meet broad preferences. Price will vary by style, by manufacturer and by material. Single hung and gliding windows tend to be less expensive than double hung or casements. Aluminum and vinyl, which vary widely in price and quality, are often the least expensive.

Finding a window that fits takes some research. Because windows can be a major investment, it pays to see through sales language and product attributes for a clear understanding. This is no more evident than in the master suite. The master suite is the place where the homeowner can design an oasis of comfort and luxury. No matter what your decorating preferences are, here are some popular ways to pamper yourself.

When creating either a romantic or high-tech atmosphere, an eclectic combination of furniture pieces will create a personal refuge or escape. It’s nice to include pieces with special meaning or history, if possible. Of course, the bedroom must include luxurious pillows, throws, duvets and other accessories to help create a relaxing atmosphere.

Voluminous plants and ferns add to the welcoming feel of the room. Artwork, in beautiful frames, completes the personalized look of the perfect escape.

You could also tap the new trend of combining an eclectic blend of sleek, contemporary styles, mixing and matching stained wood with glass and metal. This bedroom suite will stress functionality and have less ornamentation. The bed will likely be a platform, decorated with simple tailored pillows and no fussy ornamentation. Colors will be monochrome, in tweed or geometric patterns that blend easily.

No matter which style is to your liking, no master suite is complete without a large master bathroom. It might begin with a shared shower with steam bath and specialty shower fixtures (rows of body sprays, waterfall showerheads, thermostatically controlled valves to provide the exact, constant water temperature, or additional handheld shower heads). To this, we would need to add a two person whirlpool or soaking tub, separate his and her toilet areas.

Now we move to dual vanities (which can be placed at different heights to accommodate different statures) and medicine cabinets that are deep, are lighted from within and contain power outlets for electrical gadgets. The mirrors are heated so they don’t steam up. Floors are limestone or marble and are radiant heated for comfort.

Usually, the master bedroom and master bathroom are on the same heating zone. To solve the dilemma of a cool bedroom for sleeping and a warm bathroom to visit in the middle of the night or early morning, you could add one of the uniquely useful towel radiators, once found only in luxury European hotels, but now readily available in the United States. It will not only warm and dry the towels but will create an additional heat zone, so you can have a warm bathroom whenever you want. There is no finer luxury than getting out of the bath on a cold winter morning and wrapping yourself in a warm towel.

Whether you are designing your dream home, remodeling your present home or just adding a few touches to update your current surroundings, choose your style and the amenities you can’t live without, then surge ahead. There is no time like the present to make your master suite the most comfortable and luxurious retreat you can create. Clearly his cousins across the Atlantic share the same sentiment. In fact, Americans spend over $4.8 billion annually on home maintenance services.

Seasons wreak havoc on a home’s exterior, and it’s therefore vital to stay abreast of its maintenance, including repainting.

Here are 7 telltale signs that it’s time to paint your home:

1. Chalking: the formation of a fine powder on paint surfaces occurs after long-time weathering. Chalking may also occur if poor quality paint was used, over-thinned or was spread too thin or not primed and sealed. Left unchecked, chalking causes color fading.

2. Scaling or cracking: paint begins to split, giving way to severe cracks. Cracking can be caused by over thinning; poor surface preparation; painting under cool or windy conditions; or, in multiple layers of old paint. The only remedy is complete removal.

3. Flaking: if cracking is left unchecked, paint chips are loosened and peel off.

4. “Alligatoring”: long-term cracking results in deep fissures akin to alligator skin. Complete removal is the only treatment.

5. Lead Threats: today, with almost 50 percent of the U.S. housing stock at least 35 years old, many homeowners wish to address the threat of lead-based paint since it was banned by the government in 1978. Peeling lead-based paint needs immediate removal. Complete removal is the only remedy.

6. Discoloration: discoloration often appears when shrubs, vines or trellises are removed.

7. Loose caulking: around window and door panes, this can give rise to rotting and further disrepair.

The best results come from proper preparation and quality materials. When a homeowner has determined it’s time to renew the exterior of his house with a fresh coat of paint, many find exterior painting too challenging to take on themselves due to scaffolding needs, or simply because they want to allow themselves more leisure time by the pool or at a barbecue with family and friends.

Hiring professionals, enables you to rest assured that all preparation work, painting and cleanup will be performed on time and on budget with not a dirty paintbrush left behind. Updating a room’s décor is at the top of many to-do lists, but selecting the right pieces to pull a look together can be daunting. How can homeowners use what they already have and love in combination with the hot trends for the coming year?

Creating an inviting, comfortable home decor isn’t just about selecting a sofa or painting the walls. Experts point to using a wealth of elements in harmony, and focusing the feel of a room around a general theme.

Keep things current, without breaking your budget, by switching the fabrics on pillows and window coverings and discovering a few new exciting accessories. If you’ve always used framed wall décor, try adding in new elements with some mixed-medium pieces. These three-dimensional artworks add new life to forgotten corners.

Traditional furnishings can get extra punch by adding pieces that speak to the richness of European history. Textured fabrics, dark woods and classic motifs bring a time-honored, stately feeling perfect for large living rooms or cozy dens and offices.

Finding the right piece for your home is easy when you can shop complete collections. Groupings of carefully selected furnishings, accessories, lighting and floor coverings bring a coordinated, professional design to consumers without the hefty price tag. There are now different home decor styles to choose from or mix:

- The Asian decor trend brings multicultural products from across the Far East to consumers. Known for a mixture of texture and material, this new trend showcases bold color, clean lines and iconic lighting.

- The island style canvasses the globe to offer unique pieces that blend together to create the ideal retreat. Metal, leather and wicker unite with wood finished and tropical and primitive patterns to create a one-of-a-kind space.

- The outdoor living look invites viewers to experience the latest products to expand the comfort, warmth and personality of their homes to porches and patios. From environmentally friendly woods to lightweight planters and urns, this universe will allow homeowners to expand their living area into the great outdoors.

To give your home a face-lift for 2005, the design experts recommend taking a good look at how you use each room in your home. Living rooms can hold a crowd without feeling crowded with furniture that adapts to your needs. Upholstered coffee tables and ottomans can serve snacks or be used as extra seating. Benches look great under a window or entryway table, but are ready to provide a spot to pull on shoes when needed.

Whatever your personal style, look for high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. When you surround yourself with objects your love, you will be creating an environment that will put a smile on your face each time you enter the space. Soon the landscape will turn green and flowers will start blooming. Before you know it, it’ll be time to take a cue from Mother Nature and redecorate your home.

But you don’t have to wait for spring, or spend a small fortune on new furniture or an interior designer to make a dramatic change. You can do it with flowers. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and can be used to create any number of decorating effects.

"You can use flowers as a window treatment by lining up a row of simple vases on the window sill and filling them with your favorite flowers. In the kitchen, fill a vase with spaghetti, and add flowers for a fresh look. They can be used in the bathroom as air fresheners, or even as artwork hung from the walls. The possibilities are endless,” says Will Carlson of the Flower Promotion Organization.

Here are a few ideas for using flowers to decorate some of the most used rooms in your house, beginning with a project that works well anywhere you want to add a little color.

Bud vase

Materials: One narrow necked bud vase, bottle or jar, a single flower of your choice, approximately five stems of bear grass or other linear foliage, one to three stems of greenery for the rim of the bud vase , floral preservative, floral clippers.

Directions:
Step 1: fill the container with water containing floral preservative.
Step 2: cut the flower stem to about twice the height of the vase. Strip the flower's stem so that none of the leaves will be covered by water. Place the flower in the bud vase.
Step 3: to give added support and beauty, add stems of linear bear grass or other linear foliage. Cut the foliage so that they are just slightly taller than the flower.
Step 4: to give the bud vase an elegant, balanced look, insert greenery at the rim of the bud vase.
Basil and oregano aren't the only spices that can liven up your kitchen. Here’s an arrangement that’s sure to catch people’s attention every time they walk into the room:

Flower pastabilities

Materials: recycled spice jar, recycled pasta sauce jar, uncooked spaghetti, floral preservative, gerbera daisy and roses.

Directions:
Step 1: mix floral preservative and water in recycled spice jar.
Step 2: place spice jar inside recycled pasta sauce jar.
Step 3: insert spaghetti between pasta sauce jar and spice jar.
Step 4: insert flower stems into spice jar and arrange to please!

Flowers also make great centerpieces for the entryway, dining room or a breakfast nook. After the long, cold winter, a fresh armload of flowers, the textural branches of a tree and all of nature’s bountiful gifts are sure to spread cheer.

Arts & crafts style table décor

Materials: three clear glass hurricane vases, one bunch hot pink Gerberas, nine yellow roses, one bunch natural branches, nine total stems. (collect them from the backyard -- beech, birch, pussy willow, forsythia are great options. In the spring, look for flowering branches), three dinner plates or chargers, fresh evergreen branches, extra enhancements (flower petals and figurines).

Directions:
Step 1: fill hurricanes with water and flower preservative. Cut 18 stems of Gerberas approximately 12 inches long. Stems should be cut with ends flat so they rest evenly in container (six per hurricane vase). Cut roses eight inches long. Strip all foliage from the flower stems.
Step 2: cut ends of nine branches six inches long (three for each hurricane vase). Lean vertically to criss-cross inside the hurricane vase, forming a natural flower holder.
Step 3: juxtapose three roses at an angle between branches in each hurricane vase.
Step 4: cut three to six branch tips 14-16 inches long (one-two per hurricane vase). Lay six 12 inch gerbera stems along side the center branch (per hurricane vase). Insert in center of each container. Insert remaining laterals around the center insert. Add water and enjoy.
Step 5: (Optional) for an added touch, slide a favorite dinner plate or decorative charger under each hurricane vase. Enhance plates with floral petals and decorative figurines.

If you don’t want to go all out and make a centerpiece, a single flower is all it takes to add a little spice to any nook or cranny in your home. Whether you select a lily, a single rose, one gerbera daisy, or even a big fat chrysanthemum, just one is enough to liven up your indoor landscape.
Just make sure it’s fresh! The flowers' blooms or buds should not be bruised or browning. The foliage should be green without yellowing leaves; and the water the flower is sold in should smell clean. If it smells bad, chances are the flowers are old.

Buy flowers when they are closed or just partially open. Many flower varieties, such as lilies are multi-bloomed, that is, the flower has several blooms on its one stem. Try to select a single stem with one bloom open and the others closed. That way, you will be able to watch the additional blossoms open and enjoy the flower longer. Faux painting and papering techniques -- including glazes, marbled looks, wood grains, sponging, stenciling and textured looks -- can yield beautiful results. But faux finish painting can be a messy and labor-intensive project, requiring multiple steps and long wait times in between.

Now there’s a new way to faux finish -- quickly, easily and without the mess. Finishing Effects wallpapers take less time to hang than pre-pasted wallpaper and are less messy and time-consuming than paint techniques. Not only do the wallpapers deliver the depth and texture of a custom faux finish, they require no water, paint trays, or drop cloths. Believe it or not, installing these wallpapers means simply pasting the wall (yes, the wall!) and positioning the wallpaper on it for an irresistibly pretty faux finish.

This hassle-free wallpaper is installed in four simple steps: Prime the wall; paste the wall; apply the wallpaper; and redecorate. You can use a number of readily-available wallpaper pastes, and because you don’t wet the wallpaper, it is lightweight and easy to handle. Once up, the wallpaper is strong and durable with seams that won’t separate.

Indeed, these new wallpapers are some of the most exquisite faux finishes in the market today. The designers carefully imitated ancient stone walls, tumbled tile, marble, old world textures and tea-stained looks, allowing subtle colors and even hints of metallic tones to emerge in each design.

The best news is that once you’re ready for a new look, removing this wallpaper is even easier than installing it. Stripping this wallpaper is as easy -- and painless -- as taking off a bandage. Stripping all four walls of a standard-size room will take 30 minutes. Just lift a corner, grasp firmly, and each strip removes in one clean motion. Very little -- if any -- paste will remain, and it’s not even necessary to re-prime walls before repapering again.

“Faux finishes are a clever way to create dimension and depth where none exist”, says New York-based interior designer Charles Riley. Adding color not only allows homeowners to personalize a space with their own decorating style, but also provides functional benefits, such as making a room look larger or more cohesive.

Such a dramatic impact doesn’t have to have a dramatic cost! In fact, even for the most novice DIYer who may be apprehensive about home improvement, painting is a great starter project. It is easy to learn, and if you mess up, you can just paint over it! And once complete, you’ll have the satisfaction and pride that your painting project looked like a professional did it, without professional costs!

The key to achieving a great-looking paint job is to follow a few simple rules:

Don’t Fall through the Cracks

Like most remodeling projects, the key to success is preparation. Be sure to seal any cracks and gaps around windows and baseboards with a water-based, paintable caulk. Water-based caulks are low odor, easy to use, and easy to clean up with soap and water. Plus, the fast-drying formula will help to minimize your preparation time!

Additionally, be sure to repair any nail holes in walls or any areas where there is cracked paint with a paintable, fast-drying, shrink-free patching compound. Once the patch is dry, sand smooth for an ideal paint surface.

Mask Your Imperfections

Even professionals know that painting a straight line is nearly impossible. That’s why spending the extra time to line baseboards, trim and ceilings with masking tape will “mask” all the imperfections that may occur while painting along edges. Be sure to use a low tack adhesive masking tape, to ensure that delicate surfaces such as wallpaper, treated woodwork, and drywall will not be damaged when removing the tape.

In addition to protecting surfaces close to where you are painting, be sure to protect floors and woodwork from the inevitable drips and spills with drop cloths. Cloth drops are more expensive than plastic sheeting, but they work best, especially over carpets. However, if cloth isn’t in the budget, try statically treated, pre-taped drop cloths that feature a pre-taped top edge of professional grade masking tape.

Choose Wisely

When choosing a paint color, find one that is going to inspire you, make you happy and create a desired mood. Dark, dramatic colors are great for those who are not up for frequent changes. However, neutrals, available in light, medium and dark tones, are the most accepting of other accent colors, which is ideal for those who want to continually add the latest color trends or seasonal decorations.

Once you’ve chosen the hue that’s you, determine the paint finish that best suits your room: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and glossy. Flat paints offer a matte finish that are excellent for covering imperfections in walls since it will not reflect light, however they are typically not washable. Satin and eggshell finishes are very popular for wall paint since they have a very slight shine and hold up well to cleaning. Semi-gloss and glossy tend to be used for trim applications since they create a shiny, enamel appearance to surfaces.

Roll with the Punches

While you are purchasing your paint, be sure to choose the appropriate paint brush and roller. A quality brush makes it easier to apply paint evenly and accurately. Use a one- to two-inch, high-quality, nylon/polyester, angled brush because they can be used with all coatings, hold paint better and provide better brush control.

Rollers should be selected based on the type of paint being applied and texture of the surface. The rule of thumb is that the rougher the surface, the longer the nap (or depth) of the roller covering. For a semi-gloss or gloss paint to be used on very smooth surfaces, choose a roller between 1/8-in. and 1/4-in. nap. For flat paints, on medium surfaces, such as lightly textured drywall, choose a roller between 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch nap.

With these few tips, your next painting project will be a sure success! But according to the ‘Bathroom Inventory’ survey conducted by Moen Incorporated, the reality is that more than half of master bathrooms are less than 75 square-feet -- forcing most couples to make do with limited space.

Yet there are ways to reduce the congestion in this crowded room. Careful design, dedicated space for each individual and willingness to compromise can make even the smallest room feel more spacious.

Following are some top decorating tips to create a comfortable bathroom for two:

Organization is key

Small spaces require organization. Too many toiletries, cleaning products and hair dryers can make a small space feel smaller. Clear off the sink, clean out the medicine cabinet and remove products from under the sink. Take stock of what you own and what you use on a daily basis. Pare down the excess and keep only what you need. Baskets and bins will provide order to the items you plan on keeping.

It’s all about creating more room and carving out your own space. One such example is installing a glass shelf. This easy project is perfect for the DIYer, doesn’t take up counter space and gives both of you more room to store smaller toiletry items as well as keep them easily accessible.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

Mirrors have the ability to visually double the size of your bathroom. By reflecting natural light, they can give your bathroom the appearance of being more open and bright. Full sink to ceiling mirrors create the most significant illusion of increased space. But if that isn’t an option, consider a single mirror in a unique shape to create a point of visual interest.

Rethink the sink

Two sinks can make sharing a bath much easier -- provided you have the space. Many newer vanities can accommodate two sinks. You’ll need to allow at least five feet when adding a vanity for double sinks. No room? Consider side-by-side, small pedestal sinks instead. No budget for new sinks? Change your faucet with one of today’s newer high arc styles. The longer neck and spout of these faucets make it easier for both of you to have the room to brush your teeth, wash your face or even shave -- at the same time.

Shed a little light

A dark room feels cramped and crowded, while natural light can make the bath feel open and larger. Add sheer blinds or apply a film treatment to your window to let in more light, while still allowing for privacy. Consider changing the lighting fixtures as well. Overhead lighting tends to add unflattering shadows to your face when you look in the mirror. Try installing wall sconces level with the top of the mirror. This puts the light in front of you, creating the most optimal lighting for grooming.

Share Your Shower
Transform your shower into a spa experience with a massaging showerhead with multiple spray settings. This will allow you to choose and personalize your settings. Choose a vigorous massage for him and a soothing rainshower for her.

Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: DIY – expose your photos

(ARA) – You spent months searching for just the right sofa, agonized over paint colors and endlessly debated area rug options. Don’t leave your walls blank. The perfect finishing touch might be you already have: your own photos.

Thanks to innovations in digital technology using your personal snapshots to create works of art is easy. You favorite landscape, special event or vacation can be transformed to fit your style and room.

A grouping of black and white photos brings a modern touch, but not many people have the cameras or film to create this style. But digital photos can be transformed to black and white with the click of a mouse, and older photos can be scanned and changed. Keeping your pictures in the same color scheme allows you to bring a cohesive look to unrelated images. A collection of prints from similar occasions – birthdays, graduations or reunions – provide a timeline of memories.

Pictures tell a story when showcased alongside objects. Many companies will take your photos, reprint them on canvas and stretch them across a frame. These ready-to-hang creations have the appearance and texture of a painting. Add an ornate or antique frame to complete the look.

Gaze out over a pine forest in the middle of a city. Look down cobblestone streets from your basement rec room. Wake up to a Caribbean ocean while snow falls outside. You can bring a piece of paradise into your home with a wall mural.

For some, the image of a tropical sunset is the perfect way to drift off to sleep each night. Others might prefer to visit a scene from their favorite city in the den.

For smaller spaces, think about accessories. Transfer photos to fabric for custom pieces that also make great gifts. A child’s artwork can grace a pillow or tote bag. Quilts can boast a collection of smiling grandchildren. In the living room, ditch the dust-collecting jumble of frames by constructing a photo tray. Simply layer pictures under glass to create a useful display that can rest on the coffee table or sideboard when not on duty.

Artwork should be a personal expression of your style, taste and the things you love. What better way to surround yourself than with the people and places that mean the most to you.

Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: DIY - finding the right hue

(ARA) - Although walls can’t talk, the colors you choose for a room say quite a bit about the space and how it feels to your family and friends. Color can enhance creativity, provide a feeling of warmth and coziness, or create a sense of relaxation. But how do you select the perfect paint color to bring out the personality you want your room to convey?

Here are some of the most important questions (and their answers) to help you get started on your next weekend project.

How do I determine the amount of paint needed for a particular job?

Measure both the height and width of your walls. Then, add the width of all the walls in the room together. Multiply this sum by the height of one wall from floor to ceiling. Take this total number and subtract the total area of your doors, windows, archways, etc. to get the exact area of wall space you will paint. A good rule of thumb to follow is that a flat surface usually requires one gallon for every 400 square feet.

How do I select the best color for my room?

The first step is to examine your furniture, window treatments, and other accessories. From the colors represented in these items, choose your favorite colors and visit your local retailer to obtain coordinating color chips. Put the chips in the room and look at them both in the daylight and at night to see the effect lighting has on the colors. You may want to even buy a quart of your top choice and test it on one of your walls.

Because painting is simple and inexpensive, you may want to experiment with daring colors that you might not choose for more costly items like furniture or room furnishings.

For those who are a bit intimidated about using a bold color on all four walls, it can always be used for an accent wall. This would allow you to introduce a small area of bold color and then as your comfort level increases, begin incorporating a larger number of dark colors into your room.

How do colors affect a room’s size?

Strong, warm colors like reds, oranges and yellows have the tendency to close a space. Called advancing colors, these hues jump out and meet the eye. Conversely, receding colors like blue, green and violet make a room look larger because they “stand back” visually. However, the darkest values of the receding colors, like navy blue or hunter green, also tend to have a diminishing effect on a room’s size. To make small rooms appear larger, choose a white or neutral color.

Should trim work be used as an accent or painted the same color as the walls?

The answer to this question depends on what look you are trying to achieve. Use the same color if you want to downplay ordinary or unattractive trim work, or if you are trying to create a uniform, monochromatic look. Use a lighter or darker color to accentuate trim or to add subtle hints or bold flashes of color to your room.

Will the paint I chose look lighter or darker on the wall?

Over a large surface area, most colors appear darker. You may want to consider choosing a color a shade or two lighter to counteract this effect. To soften a color, try applying a lighter or more muted color over the original hue using a design technique such as rag rolling, sponging, or color washing.

How do I know which paint finish is right for my room?

Flat finishes have no shine, making them ideal for hiding minor surface imperfections. However, they are best utilized in low-trafficked rooms that don’t require continual washing or scrubbing. Satin or semi-gloss finishes are durable, easy to clean and are great choices for kitchens and bathrooms. Gloss finishes feature the highest shine and best durability, so they are perfect for doors, trim and specialty uses.

What color should I paint the ceiling?

Painting a ceiling white or off-white will create the illusion of higher ceilings and a more open space. If you already have high ceilings and want to create a more “cozy” feel to the room, consider moving away from the traditional white ceiling paint to a medium or dark color. You also need to consider lead time as some fixtures might need to be custom made.

Take your time: give lighting as much consideration as other decorating decisions like flooring, wall covering, and furniture. Create a master plan of how you want the finished house to look, and work at it over a year or two. For instance, do you want mini-pendants versus recessed lighting over the kitchen island, pin-point spots versus a wall outlet to illuminate artwork, or a floor outlet for a lamp in your seating area?

Ask the experts: to make the best decisions, embrace your lighting showroom personnel. Get information from them, and bring them information. Use your camera. Bring a digital image of the room and what is not working. If you are trying to create a decorative element, bring in swatches of fabric, pillows, and paint chips. Make the fixture the statement to complement the room.

Quality counts: no matter what your budget, opt for timeless materials like bronze and glass over their plastic counterparts. Timeless designs in top materials will always look right and can become family heirlooms.

Focus pocus: put lighting to work creating focal points. Add lights to direct the eye in a new direction by focusing on a piece of art, furniture or the mantel.

Dim some: dimmers are an inexpensive trick-of-the-trade. They help set a special mood in the home by allowing you to manipulate the light. Install them at the wall for ceiling fixtures and even buy them for table lamps.

Space case: add more drama to a space with accent lighting. By illuminating the top of a bookcase, adding under-cabinet lighting or hanging a colored pendant over the kitchen island, you can create islands of light that bring the grain of the wood, the print of the wallpaper or the color of a wall to life.

Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: personalize with paint

(ARA) - Painting is the easiest way to make a dramatic and instant impact on a room.

Be sure to seal any cracks and gaps around windows and baseboards with a water-based, paintable caulk, such as Polyseamseal All Purpose Adhesive Caulk (www.polyseamseal.com).

Be sure to use a low tack adhesive masking tape, such as Duck brand Perfect Release Plus Painter's Tape (www.duckproducts.com), to ensure that delicate surfaces such as wallpaper, treated woodwork, and drywall will not be damaged when removing the tape.

Courtesy of ARA Content

To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: decorating the dining room

The dining room, offers a natural point of departure for considering the individual rooms of the house with regard to interior decorating.

First, as to a dominant dining room color: the dining room should be a room of good cheer, a bright, happy room. But it should not be too bright either. If it is on the sunny side of the house, let one of the colors dominate; white, cream white, blues, greens, grays or violet. If on the shady side, gain warmth by the use of yellows, orange, warm tans, russets, pinks, yellowish greens and reds.

Do not use restless-patterned wall papers. If low, the ceiling should never be dark, since this makes the room appear still lower. A single large rug, harmonizing with the wall color scheme is admirable in any room. In the dining room, however, a figured carpet is often preferred for practical reasons: it stands wear and tear around the table better.

The ideal lightings for dining rooms are side lights. Dining-room drop lights or domes are very trying to the eyes of those who dine, and are unbecoming. Side lights (adding candles for grace and charm) are far pleasanter to the eyes and look better.

In the dining room the table is the dominating furniture note. A round table, an oblong table or a square table may be the more desirable according to the shape of the room. In the dining room, as elsewhere, repetition in color establishes the color tone of the room. The touch influences us both physically and emotionally. For example, our favorite texture can calm us, makes us feel comfortable and relaxed.

Therefore, when choosing fabrics for our home decor, it is crucial to take into account not only the colors and patterns of the fabrics but also its character and quality. The fabric often indicates the comfort of seating area: an armchair covered in velvet or cashmere is spotted as comfortable even before one sits in it.

Velvet, cotton, cashmere, silk, and leather have their own distinctive feel to them. Close your eyes and pass your hands across these surfaces, not only will you easily identify them but you will also feel different emotions.

Textures are also key to interpreting different styles, such as Asian decor. Rough and tactile elements, such leather, chenille, raffia, wicker, rush, and sea grass, have an earthly connection. Combine these tactile materials with earth tones and you set the stage for a rugged yet refined interpretation of African-inspired interiors. Solf and delicate fabrics such as silk, taffeta, satin, and linen are symbols of luxury and comfort and are perfect to sleep on. Silks, produced by silk worms, are by their very nature luxurious.

Often hand-woven from organic materials, these rather expensive, high-quality fabrics are a sensual delight. In today’s market most fabrics are a blend of natural fibers and synthetic materials, such as rayon and polyester, making them more stain resistant and easier to care for but noticeably not as exciting to the touch. However, cotton quilts a little worn with age, cashmere blankets, and other fabrics made from organic fibers are the best to cuddle up with.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: natural light and windows

No interior designer has ever heard a homeowner complain about too much natural light. Sunlight is cheerful, it makes people feel good. With today’s window technology, you can bring as much sunlight into your home as you like, and at the same time depend upon enhanced glazing options and low-E glass to solve the problem of drafty, energy-inefficient windows.

On the style side, windows previously associated with custom designs are now available in standard sizes. Replacing an uninspired double-hung unit with a graceful arch-top design is relatively easy and affordable. In fact, it’s not difficult to change the entire architectural look of a room by simply replacing the windows. Want to transform a 50- year-old space into a stylish contemporary setting? Exchange an old window with a sleek casement-style unit. For drama, group individual casement or awning windows in an interesting formation along one wall. Where there is no place to add a window, bring natural light in with an operable skylight, or a roof window.

But when considering a replacement window for a specific room, it’s important to keep in mind the architectural style both of the exterior of the house and of the other windows. If you choose a look that’s different, select one that’s at least compatible. Windows are placed on the exterior of a house in a pattern. If you change either the window style or pattern of placement in one room, you may inadvertently create an eyesore on the outside of your home.

As you consider window placement in a room, also take a good look at the view you will bring indoors with a new unit. Will it create a pleasant focal point or will you face the neighbor’s shed?

Also consider the direction the window face in terms of the sun throughout the day. While a southern exposure offers the most sunlight, your room may get too hot― especially during the summer― unless the window is covered. Windows that face west receive lots of light in the late afternoon, which may be perfect for when the kids do their homework at the table. On the other hand, if early risers need a jolt of sunshine to get them up and running, they will appreciate a window that faces east.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: mixing colors and patterns

Mixing colors and patterns is an intimidating decorating journey. But you can achieve outstanding decor combinations by following one key rule: take into consideration the weight of the biggest elements in your home decor.

The visually strongest components of a room’s decor are curtains, wall treatments and bedspreads, along with big furniture such as sofas or large armchairs. And the larger the area or item of furniture, the more careful you need to be.

To avoid any decoraqting faux-pas, you can choose to follow one of the two rules: select a neutral color for the biggest items and sprinkle colorful accents in your room, or select a dominant pattern or color for the largest elements in your room decor and link them all together.

The safest way is to stick to neutral colors for large pieces. Furthermore, they are usually the costlier pieces, and choosing a neutral color means that you will not loose interest and will not feel the need to replace them too often. Consider colors like light grey, matt silver, off-white or mocha colors. You can then be as creative as you like and add splashes of colors and creative patterns with cushions, throws, paintings and various design accents.

The other solution is to give the room a visual decor flow, by selecting similar patterns and colors for the largest decoration items. It is a bolder approach, but it can produce sumptuous decor! If you choose for example a certain geometric pattern for the bed cover or curtains, replicate similar patterns on the other largest elements of the room. Then, pick the dominant color and use it in cushions, throws and most design accents. You can also create more contrast by adding a few items of a different color, but make sure that they do not break the visual harmony of the decor.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: lighting a room-1

Accent lights
Often the most overlooked element in any room but always the most dramatic, accent light draws attention to a particular element, such as an interesting architectural or decorative object. The key here is choosing what to highlight. Don’t light every object at once or none will stand out!

Be creative with your accent lights. Halogen spotlights can be used to accentuate a beautiful work of art. A light can also be placed on the floor beneath an indoor plant to create shadows on the ceiling.

With accent light and a few well chosen decor accents and paintings, any room can turn into a theater of arts!

Decorative lights
While accent lights emphasize a specific accent, decorative lights are themselves the attention drawing accents. They do not provide a lot of light; their sole purpose is to grab attention and ad to the dramatic scheme of your decor.

Accent lights play a leading role in contemporary home decorating, along ceramic vessels, paintings and other design accents.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: lighting a room-1

Lighting is the easiest way to revamp a room decor. With a few well chosen and positioned lightings, a once neutral room can turn into a cheerful and versatile space! Knowing about the different types of lightings is the key to creating a functional, aesthetic, and versatile lighting arrangement.

Ambient lights
Ambient lights illuminate the whole space. Most ceiling lights that diffuse the light are ambient lights, other examples are wall sconces. The fixtures cover the wall with light for an overall glow and the wall reflects the light and diminishes the look of a single source.

Harmonious ambient lighting should be too dominant. It should give the background to your decor, but not be the focal point.

Task lights
Task lights are purely functional. They should always be planned in the lighting scheme of any room, illuminating specific areas for specific purposes, such as reading your favorite magazine in the comfort of a welcoming armchair.

The key to good task lightings is installing them directly over or slightly to the side of each area. Include task light in every area of the room where you carry out specific activities, at the desk, above the bar and dining table. Link them all to separate switches to be able to switch them on and off whenever you need them.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: decorating styles

Classic style

The taste for the classic style has never gone out of fashion. Marble, mirrors with gilt frames or fabrics in intense natural colors are the elements that work to achieve this style. The use of furniture made from natural wood, wrought iron or wicker can also help us to give our rooms a delightful classical atmosphere.

While not turning their backs on technology, some interior designers have opted for the recovery of an old-fashioned esthetic which involves recycling old models or materials, inspiring them at the same time with a modern sensibility.

The task of reviving old formulas and adapting them to new contexts create a warm and casual atmosphere. For example, classic kitchens tend to have a warm, intimate character that makes them an attractive invitation to family meals. A bedroom with a certain classic air will project the comfort and warmth necessary for a pleasant rest.

Contemporary style

Far from the complexity of the classic style, contemporary trends in decoration use clean, essential lines. Favoring the use of white, delighting in empty space, today’s rooms are zones created to combat the chaos and incessant buzz of urban life.

In the most modern trends in decoration, glass has become one of the most outstanding features. For bathroom design, these transparent surfaces are extremely attractive, since their qualities (brightness, clarity and cleanliness) turn the bathroom into a zone full of light.

Along with glass, stainless steel has been the other favorite material. Thanks to its bright, metallic sparkle, steel can be combined with all sorts of materials and with numerous colorful accents and works of art.

Modern living rooms are created based on irony, on the juxtaposition of contrasting elements, the redefining of old standards, or breaking with convention. Modern kitchen design attempts to adapt itself to our frenetic contemporary way of life. For that reason, functionalism and rationality, clean, efficient lines have turned into indispensable guidelines for any model. Contemporary bedroom design attempts to adapt itself to the constant changes and new customs involved in everyday life. And the new materials, simple shapes and straight lines used in conceiving the latest trends in bedrooms, aim at creating a sense of calm.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: decorating petite rooms

When decorating a smaller room, space is generally the main concern. But there are different ways to visually expand the space of your room.

Play with lights and color

Whenever possible, let as much natural light flow into the room as you can. Do not block windows with blinds or heavy curtains. Natural light creates a warm atmosphere, and makes a small room more welcoming.

Also, reflecting natural light visually expands the space. When facing the main light source, mirrors become another source of natural light, and make the room brighter and look bigger.

To visually enlarge the space further, paint walls white or other soft and clear colors. These shades will bounce, not capture, light. Light-colored floors also reflect the light and make a room bright and airy.

Choose the right furniture

Smaller room proportions do not mean you have to sacrifice comfort or attractiveness when selecting furniture. Considering “function” and simplicity in your choices is the key to success.

Think about the main function of the room. It will guide you in simplifying the quantity, style, and placement of furniture. If the room has many functions, select furniture that fold, stack or hang, and only bring them out when needed.

Keeping in mind a few designers’ techniques will help you to further create the illusion of more space:

Keep furniture finishes and styles the same throughout a room. Reflective glass or glossy furniture will also further brighten up the room.

Choose sleek furniture for a slimmer and lighter look and keep seating, beds, and cabinets low to give the illusion of a high ceiling.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: decorating transit areas

When decorating a house we usually concentrate our efforts on rooms like the living room, the kitchen or bedrooms. These are indeed the rooms where we spend most of our times and they do deserve our attention.

Nonetheless, decorating the areas of transit of the house (entrance halls, stairways, and corridors) will add a lot of character to a home decor, facilitate transition from one room atmosphere to another room style and live-up your spirit!

Entrance halls
Even if we do not spend much time in this room, the entrance hall is one of the key areas of the house: the place where we come into and exit the house, the area where we great and welcome friends and visiting family members.

Creating a warm and welcoming decor should therefore be the main objective when arranging an entrance hall. Do you feel home as soon as you enter your house? Do your visitors feel welcome?

Uncluttered space enhances the feelings of calm and breaks with the hustle and bustle of urban life. Beginning to feel more relax? You are home!

Warm colors will invite your guest to come in, represent the joy you have to welcome them. Also, style the area with a few chosen accents, reveal your tastes and personality, it is your home indeed!

Stairways
Stairways are another key transit area in your house. Though for many years stairways were considered only in purely practical terms, contemporary home decorating trends offer a variety of options to choose from.

Go beyond simple functionalism, use colors, works of art, plants. The bottom of the stairs and their halfway point are perfect to display a painting or sculpture, if you have more space. Or stage your favorite family picture along the walls coming up to the first floor.

Corridors
Corridors are often more neglected when decorating a house. True, we do not spend much time in these areas, just passing through, going from one room to another room. But how many times per day do we go through those passageways?

Keeping in mind that their main purpose is to connect the different parts of the interior of the house, do not create obstacles with too many furniture. Display works of art, sculptures, arrange design accents on small shelves or consoles. Most importantly, use sconces to light up the walls, there is nothing more depressing than gloomy corridors!

You feel that some of your rooms are too cluttered? Try to take out some furniture and place them in the corridors. Choose long tables or consoles and give them a new life with runners, pictures or ceramics vessels. Voila!

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: decorating a comfort zone

Over the past decade, Western design trends have integrated what has been known for centuries among Asian cultures as Feng Shui theories: the way we decorate our living spaces has a major influence on our emotions and moods.

Decorating our homes following certain principles can help reduce stress and can build up feelings of well-being and calm.

One of tenet of the theory is that there should be a designated space in every home where you can take time for yourself and just chill out. It doesn’t have to be a separate room. It could be a quiet area for reading. Balconies, decks, or quiet corners in a bedroom or living room all have the potential to be a rejuvenating comfort zone.

If you enjoy reading, set a space apart—big or small. No matter how much you love spending time in the company of family and friends, there comes a time when privacy is just what you need.

Reading, meditating, cooking your favorite meals, listening to music or practicing yoga; think about what relaxes you and dedicate a space to your well being. Select relaxing colors. Choose soft textures and materials, and forms that are curvy and simple.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: choosing colors

A good alternative to liven up homes is to fill the space with color. The use of strong colors on the walls, in furniture and in decorative touches can often succeed in creating a new atmosphere that does away with the former gloom and monotony.

Choose the colors you like best
There are no rules when choosing colors, so don’t be afraid to experiment. However, it is key to know what colors you like best.

You don’t have to go too far from your favorite colors when choosing colors—don’t just choose what designers have set for the season. If you need time to appreciate a wall color, it is probably not for you. Think about your favorite colors found in nature and how they work together. They will successfully apply to your home decor. For example, a scene of autumn trees against a stormy sky can translate into a light grey sofa graced with a deep brown silk throw.

From the soothing character of blues to the energetic and exciting power of reds
Although there are no perfect rules for choosing colors, your choice will stimulate certain moods. For example, cooler blues and greens tend to soothe your senses, evoking quiet and relaxing feelings. Therefore, olive green, mint green, and ocean blue are perfect for a bedroom and other personal relaxing spaces.

Also think of the impact of the colors you chose on other elements of your home decor. Shades of browns that vary from reddish browns to grey-browns will add enough richness so that all you need are a few additional colorful design accents. But if you chose different shades of white for your wall, it will definitely give you more freedom to stage your favorite paintings and accents.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: arranging design accents

Add details: arrange beautiful design accents and display works of arts…

More than anything else, we notice and remember the details of a room’s decoration; the singular touches that express the home owner’s tastes and personality. Accents and works of art significantly impact the atmosphere of a room.

They make the difference between a space that looks aesthetically designed and thoroughly thought out, and one that looks half-finished. But certain rules need to be followed to create an organized and neat decor.

Some of the best details are works of art: exquisite ceramic wares, striking abstract paintings, picture frames, and fabrics, among others. Or they could be collections of accents such as vases, trays and boxes.

When arranging objects and creations, keep proportions in mind. A large vase on a small console looks awkward. A tiny box on a large table appears lost. For a more emphatic effect, group three or more things from the same collection, but always balance one large object with several smaller ones.

You can also group dissimilar objects (for example a vase, a box and a picture frame can be set together on a corner table). But link them by colors to create a harmonious display.

To view more home decorating tips, visit: decorating tips
To discover inspiring Asian decor ideas, follow: Asian decor

decorating tips: arranging paintings

Paintings are an essential element of any home decor. They are also a tasteful way to personalize your spaces. But to harmoniously arrange artworks and to create a well balanced and artful decor, some rules of thumb need to be followed:

1. Reinforce the existing theme
Consider the dominant inspirations in your room decor. Is the room contemporary or classic? Is the color scheme subdued and soothing or contrasted and energizing? The answers should give you a hint to which type of art would best enhance your decor. A colorful and powerful abstract painting would perfectly reinforce a creative modern decor but surely clash in a tranquil classic bedroom setting.

Furthermore, it is safer to stick to a specific theme when combining art in the same room. A figurative landscape watercolor would usually not combine well with a geometrical abstract creation.

2. Arrange the larger artworks first
It is recommended to hang the largest pieces first, as they will have the bigger impact on the room decor.

Make sure the orientation of the art fits the space created by the wall. A large horizontally oriented work of art will suit a long wide wall better. A vertically oriented painting will perfectly complement a narrow and high wall.

Secondly, always position the painting on the wall so that the centre of the painting is at your eye line.

Consider also the size of the furniture piece when hanging works of art above furniture. In general, a painting should not be wider than the sofa below it. To create a balanced decor, an artwork should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture piece.

Lastly, creating a visual connection between the furniture and the art will create a dramatic effect. A painting with a dominant green in it will look better near a sofa upholstered in the same hue. As it is usually not possible to change your furnishing’s color, you can also create more subtle visual links: place a striking red ceramic vessel on the chest bellow your vivid and passionate red abstract painting, or play with the colors of your cushions and throws, the possibilities are endless!

3. Regroup the smaller paintings and pictures
When it comes to arranging smaller artworks, remember that grouping pieces will create a stronger effect. Sprinkling various small paintings and pictures in your decor would only create a clustered and “noisy” space.

When positioning a group of paintings together, then paintings in the middle of the arrangement should be at eye level.

Looking for a formal atmosphere? Arrange your paintings symmetrically. Willing to create a more modern and dramatic space?
